CRUNCH THROUGH THE NIGHT:

It is crunch time tonight in Congress. Speaker Pelosi is moving towards a full floor vote on the Obama/Pelosi Health Care Plan up for a vote. At the time of publishing, votes are expected around 8 or 9pm EST. I received a call early this morning that my Orthopaedic Services were in demand.  Apparently, the Speaker, the President’s Chief of Staff Rahm Emmanuel and their staffs have been “breaking arms of anyone and everyone in sight that is on the fence about The Bill.”  These Enforcers have put Freedom, Liberty and constituent representation aside.

capitolatnight

Do your congressmen/women have any idea what is in this 1990 page Bill, and what it means for each and every American?  So you do not have to count, it creates 118 new boards, commissions, offices and bureaus.  Supposedly, ALL of these new entities will be selflessly looking out for your “betterment.”  Somehow, ObamaCare needs all of these levels of review and personnel to provide better and more available healthcare to more Americans, and plans to work this miracle do this at a fraction of current costs.  (Oh, and they will eliminate Medicaid fraud in the meantime.)  This has little connection with reality.

There is another option.  A different reform package has been purposed by The GOP Leadership, and every member of the minority has signed on.  In fact, before this debate is over maybe a few “Blue Dog Democrats” (now with broken arms) will sign on as well. This reform package:

  • EMPOWERS the public,
  • Lowers health care premiums,
  • with pre-existing conditions,
  • Reduces junk lawsuits,
  • Establishes Universal Access Programs for those
  • Prevents insurers from canceling a policy,
  • Allows Americans to purchase insurance across state lines,
  • EXPANDS HSA’S, and
  • Promotes PREVENTION & WELLNESS.

Two Congressmen need to be commended for their support of Prevention, Wellness and HSA’s:   Congressman Fortenberry from Nebraska and Congressman McCotter fromMichigan. As many of you know, last Wednesday Glenn Beck asked me to “borrow” his audience and to give them a frontline assessment of the health care legislation pending in Congress.

In my discussion with Judge Napolitano on the Glenn Beck Show, I hammered on the fact that the rationing and enforcement boards were already created and passed into law through the stimulus bill, and that the President had already appointed the members, funding them to the tune of $20.6 BILLION.  When I pointed out that these boards were charged with directing healthcare “at the time and place of care,” Judge Napolitano expressed outrage at the prospect of these government entities insinuating themselves into the previously private and confidential doctor/patient relationship.  The biggest outrage is the fact that no one seems to know that THIS IS ALREADY LAW!  These rationing boards threaten your privacy, your control, your health, your treatment possibilities, and your future.

Enter Congressman McCotter again.  In the GOP Alternative Bill,  Congressman McCotter added two very important Sections :

DIVISION D—PROTECTING THE DOCTOR-PATIENT RELATIONSHIP

SEC. 401. RULE OF CONSTRUCTION. Nothing in this Act shall be construed to interfere with the doctor-patient relationship or the practice of medicine.

SEC. 402. REPEAL OF FEDERAL COORDINATING COUNCIL FOR COMPARATIVE EFFECTIVENESS RESEARCH. Effective on the date of the enactment of this Act, section 804 of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 is repealed.

With the addition of these two Sections, the subterranean health care coup within The Stimulus Bill, becomes NULL & VOID.

I thank those in Congress who were willing to listen to ‘the grunts on the front line of our health care system and to create the alternative Bill. I thank Congressman McCotter for (1) having the “guts” to call out the President, the Speaker, Senator Reid for their subterfuge in enacting the rationing and enforcement boards, and (2) for proposing a remedy for the unpalatable Democratic draught.

Health Care is too important to enact by default.  It deserves debate and dialogue.  We need Healthcare Reform that is above-board, not back-room.  We need a simplified health care system that can deal with reality, not smoke and mirrors.  We do not need to add expensive bureaucratic gridlock that limits your access to treatments and care, as we bankrupt the actual healthcare providers, the doctors, nurses, therapists, technicians and hospitals on the front line of health care.  We need to identify the ailments in our system, and identify solutions that do not create worse side effects and complications.  To quote English dramatist John Fletcher, let’s make sure “the medicine is not worse than the malady!”

Historic PelosiCare Debate Going On Into The Night

from: BigGovernment.com

by Brian Darling

Today, a historic debate will commence on a bill that would impose big government health care on all Americans.  Nobody knows if this bill is going to pass and many questions about the bill remain unanswered.  All those who cherish the idea of limited government and a health care system driven by free market principles are hoping that good prevails over evil.

Yesterday, the House Rules Committee passed the rule to consider H.R. 3962 (PelosiCare), the Affordable Health Care for America Act, and this debate will be covered live on C-SPAN all day long.  Today, the American people can watch the debate in the House of Representatives on legislation that would dramatically change the way health care services are delivered.

HECHY22_PH1

Who is the Next Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky?

The vote on final passage of the bill is going to be close and people looking to the 2010 congressional election cycle are going to watch this vote to see which Blue Dog Democrats, Democrats from conservative leaning districts, are going to be forced to Walk the Plank and vote for an unpopular bill.  Dan Perrin of Red State has an excellent review of what happed to one term former Congresswoman Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky of Pennsylvania.  Perrin wrote “we are reminded of the case of Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky (D-PA) who famously switched her vote to give then President Clinton his tax increase.”  She lost her re-election the next year and became the poster child for the 1994 Republican sweep of Congress.

It is possible that a handful of Congressman from a conservative leaning district are considered the deciding votes to pass PelosiCare and that may cause them problems going into an election cycle that, if the Governor’s elections in NJ and VA are any indication, may be an uphill climb for many Democrats.

Mandates

The PelosiCare bill is very long and complicated.  Congressional Quarterly (subscription required) reports that the bill’s coverage requirements include an individuals mandate requiring “nearly all individuals to obtain health care coverage, beginning in 2013.”  Also, an employer mandate requiring “employers to offer their employees health care insurance, or make an insurance contribution on their behalf, starting in 2013.”  A federal heath insurance exchange will be created and being operation in 2013 “that would allow individuals and small businesses to purchase health insurance from insurers participating in the exchange.”  Many conservatives, and libertarians like Michael Cannon at CATO, object to the mandates, because they feel that mandating health insurance is a means to a government takeover of health care.

Public Option

The controversial public option is part of PelosiCare and “requires the establishment of a public health insurance option within the insurance exchange by 2013.”  The federal government would “run the public option and negotiate with providers to determine rates.”  The Heritage Foundation argues that the problems with a public option are that the “costs are hidden,” public provided health care offers “substandard care compared to private health insurance,” the government be unfairly setting up rules for competition between the government and private health insurance providers,  and that “as many as 119 million Americans would no longer be in private coverage.”

The end goal of the public option for the left is a “the end goal is definitely a single-payer system. That’s why many supporters of a single-payer system, where the government runs the whole health system, are suddenly converts to choice and private competition as long as there is a public plan.”  Don’t believe me and The Heritage Foundation?  Just listen to Rep Jan Schakowsky (D-Il).   Also, PelosiCare prevents insurance companies from denying or lowering coverage because of an individuals pre-existing condition starting in 2013.

Taxes

Taxes would be raised under PelosiCare.  The bill imposes a 5.4 percent tax surcharge on individuals earning $500,000 or $1 million for married couples.  This is scored by the Congressional Budget Office as a $461 billion in revenues to pay for the bill.  There is a controversial 2.5% surcharge on medical devices that will be passed on to you, the consumer.  Health Savings Accounts HSAs are under attack with discriminatory tax provisions intended on legislating HSAs out of existence.  Ryan Ellis of Americans for Tax Reform has compiled a comprehensive list of all the tax increases in PelosiCare.

Cost

The Heritage Foundation estimates the cost of this bill, over the next 10 years, to be $1.5 trillion.  The President promised that ObamaCare would not cost the American people more than $900 billion, yet the bill being considered in the House breaks yet another Obama promise.  If you take the CBO price tag and add the so called Doc Fix bill, which changes the way doctors are reimbursed for Medicate payments and has been part of the Obamacare debate from the start, that adds another $245 billion over the next 10 years.

Donald Marron, former CBO director, estimated that there are $217 billion in additional spending ignored by CBO.  Even if the bill cost under the arbitrary $900 billion limit requested by the President, that seems to be a $900 billion expansion of the federal government that we, as a nation, don’t need right now.

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) scored this bill as a net savings of $129 billion over the next 10 years.  Only in Washington, D.C. could a bill that expands government, raises taxes, creates numerous new federal programs and costs over one trillion dollars be considered legislation that saves taxpayer’s monies.  Even if you accept the CBO’s numbers as true, you have some shocking numbers.  There are $427 billion in promised cuts to programs and we are not clear who will be impacted by these massive cuts to programs that many are relying on for health care services.  There are $594 in additional revenues, this means taxes and these monies will be coming out of other productive sectors of the economy.

Abortion

The abortion issue has become the most serious stumbling block for Pelosicare.  Congressman Bart Stupak (D-MI), co-chairman of the House Pro-Life caucus has warned leaders that up to 40 democrats might vote against PelosiCare unless if stronger language is not added to the bill to prevent federal funding of insurance plans that cover abortion services.  If these Pro-Life Democrats follow through with that threat, the bill will not pass.

Stupak has an Amendment that he wants to offer that would prevent insurance plans from getting federal monies to cover abortions.  Supporters of PelosiCare argue that the bill does not require insurance plans to cover abortions, yet the plan would empower the Obama Administration to decide whether the government run public option would cover elective abortions.  Is there any question that bureaucrats in the Obama Administration would support government funded abortions?

Congressman Brad Ellsworth (D-IN) has offered an amendment that no federal funding would be allowed for abortion services and all Americans would have access to at least one plan that does not cover abortions.  The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and the National Right to Life don’t think this is enough, but it will be interesting to see how the Democrats in the House Pro-Life Caucus vote on PelosiCare with the Ellsworth language added to the bill.  Abortion could be the issue that takes down comprehensive health care reform in the end.

Immigration

The President promised that illegal immigrants would not be covered by the health care reform proposal.  Joe Wilson (R-SC) disagreed.  The immigration issue seems to be unresolved and an issue that will be hotly debated today.

The bottom line is that this debate will be played out over this important weekend in the fight against big government.  Feel free to use this as an open thread during the debate and remember to watch these elite politicians as they attempt to seize control of private health care, raise your taxes and spend over a trillion of your dollars.

Pelosi Is Bent on Ramming Obamacare Through, No Matter What!

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi rammed ObamaCare down the throats of the American people early Sunday Morning.  As Congressman Tom Price, who happens to know a little something about health care as he’s also one of the few doctors in Congress, recently said: “Your concerns about a government takeover of health care have been totally ignored by Speaker Pelosi and her allies, who worked behind closed doors to write the bill. After months of debate, the bill they introduced today is essentially the same bill the American people have flat-out rejected.” Truth be told, Congressman Price’s words were tempered when you consider the reality of what’s really happening in Washington. Pelosi’s latest incarnation of ObamaCare – dubiously titled the “Affordable Health Care for America Act,” (H.R. 3962) is not merely “the same bill the American people have flat-out rejected” … It’s actually far worse. At nearly 2,000 pages, it’s almost twice the size of Pelosi’s first bill (H.R. 3200) and includes even more of what the American people have already flat-out rejected. And make no mistake, Pelosi’s plan to ram this latest version of ObamaCare down the throats of the American people with lightning speed is no accident … it’s a calculated political move to try to pass ObamaCare before you and millions of other concerned Americans have a chance to once again rally against it. We can’t let her get away with it. Congressman Price observed, the “future of American health care is in the balance and we are on the clock.” He’ right. How we, the American people, respond right here and right now will determine the fate of health care in this country forever. We can stop this government takeover of health care, but the time to make our voices heard is now.

Page 111 – Section 223 establishes a new board of federal bureaucrats (the “Health Benefits Advisory Committee”) to dictate the health plans that all individuals must purchase.

Page 211 – Section 321 establishes a new government-run health plan that, according to non-partisan actuaries at the Lewin Group, would cause as many as 114 million Americans to lose their existing coverage.

Page 297 – Section 501 imposes a 2.5 percent tax on all individuals who do not purchase “bureaucrat-approved” health insurance – the tax would apply on individuals with incomes under $250,000, thus breaking a central promise of then-Senator Obama’s presidential campaign.

Do you believe Pelosi and Obama when they say “if you like your plan you can keep your plan” … that you ultimately won’t be forced to live with government-run insurance? Check out this provision…

Page 94 – Section 202(c) prohibits the sale of private individual health insurance policies, beginning in 2013, forcing individuals to purchase coverage through the federal government.

Of course, Members of Congress and their family members need not worry about how this radical overhaul of our nation’s health care will affect them because…

Page 225 – Section 330 permits—but does not require —Members of Congress to enroll in government-run health care.

Here Are A Few More Little Nasties In Pelosi’s H.R. 3962. We’re not finished. It would be impossible to mention every egregious provision in Pelosi’s 1,990 page bill, but here are a few more notables… just in case your blood isn’t already boiling.

Page 110 – Section 222(e) requires the use of federal dollars to fund abortions through the government-run health plan—and, if the Hyde Amendment were ever not renewed, would require the plan to fund elective abortions.

Page 313 – Section 512 imposes an 8 percent “tax on jobs” for firms that cannot afford to purchase “bureaucrat-approved” health coverage; according to an analysis by Harvard Professor Kate Baicker, such a tax would place millions “at substantial risk of unemployment”—with minority workers losing their jobs at twice the rate of their white counterparts.

Page 336 – Section 551 imposes additional job-killing taxes, in the form of a half-trillion dollar “surcharge,” more than half of which will hit small businesses; according to a model developed by President Obama’s senior economic advisor, such taxes could cost up to 5.5 million jobs.

Page 520 – Section 1161 cuts more than 150 billion [dollars] from Medicare Advantage plans, potentially jeopardizing millions of seniors’ existing coverage.

Page 733 – Section 1401 establishes a new Center for Comparative Effectiveness Research; the bill includes no provisions preventing the government-run health plan from using such research to deny access to life-saving treatments on cost grounds, similar to Britain’s National Health Service, which denies patient treatments costing more than 35,000 [pounds].

And last, but certainly not least:

Page 1174 – Section 1802(b) includes provisions entitled ‘Taxes On Certain Insurance Policies’ to fund comparative effectiveness research, breaking Speaker Pelosi’s promise that ‘We will not be taxing [health] benefits in any bill that passes the House,’ and the President’s promise not to raise taxes on families with incomes under 250,000 [dollars].

“The Worst Bill Ever: Epic New Spending And Taxes, Pricier Insurance, Rationed Care, Dishonest Accounting: The Pelosi Health Bill Has It All.” That’s what the Wall Street Journal had to say about H.R. 3962. But that’s not all the Journal said: “The health bill she [Pelosi] unwrapped last Thursday, which President Obama hailed as a ‘critical milestone,’ may well be the worst piece of post-New Deal legislation ever introduced.” Here’s a scary prognosis: “Taxes will need to rise precipitously, even as ObamaCare so dramatically expands government control of health care that eventually all medicine will be rationed via politics.” The Journal also writes: “Yet at this point, Democrats have dumped any pretense of genuine bipartisan ‘reform’ and moved into the realm of pure power politics as they race against the unpopularity of their own agenda. The goal is to ram through whatever income-redistribution scheme they can claim to be ‘universal coverage.’ The result will be destructive on every level — for the health-care system, for the country’s fiscal condition, and ultimately for American freedom and prosperity.” That last paragraph gives us valuable insight as to exactly how we can stop these idiotic leftist health care schemes once and for all. Extreme liberals in the House and the Senate, as well as Barack Obama, are indeed racing against their rising unpopularity. And health care will only be passed if these extreme liberals can make false and empty promises and ram legislation through Congress before the American people realize they are being duped. That’s been their plan of action with each and every previous incarnation of ObamaCare and that is still their plan today. Pelosi and her allies in Congress forgot long ago that they serve the American people… that they work for you. And they weren’t exactly thrilled when the American people soundly rejected their first health care “reform” scam. So now, instead of heeding the will of the people, they’ve decided to take off the gloves. It’s almost as if they’re saying;  Oh… so you (the American people) didn’t like our first health care offering… fine… we’ll show you who’s boss… let’s see how you like what we’re going to ram down your throats now. But you can stop them… you can make a difference … you’ve already made a huge difference. Your Blast Faxes and phone calls were the reason the Pelosi-Reid Congress had to put the brakes on each and every previous incarnation of ObamaCare. You made a difference then and you can make a difference right now. With this latest bill, Pelosi, Obama and Reid are hoping that the American people are tired… that you will give up on this fight. Let’s prove them wrong. Let’s put a lid on this scheme once and for all. The time to speak up is now.

Pelosi’s Bill Is Even Worse Than You Think. Everything that was intolerable in the first House health care bill (H.R. 3200), is still in the second incarnation (H.R. 3962). Congressman Price again: “Government-run insurance? Still in the bill. Higher taxes? You betcha. An individual mandate that restricts choices and innovation by requiring Washington to define what qualifies as health insurance? Check. A job-killing employer mandate, a budget-busting expansion of the Medicaid entitlement, and countless provisions that set Washington bureaucrats firmly between you and your doctor? Better believe it.” Price adds: “H.R. 3962 has all the ‘government takeover’ of H.R. 3200 with an extra thousand pages thrown into the mix. That’s a whole lot of government involvement in personal, private health care decisions.” As if that’s not enough, here, courtesy of Congressman Mike Pence’s House Republican Conference, are just a few more goodies Pelosi threw into H.R. 3962:
